One of the best feelings in the world is helping someone.
For me, that feeling came on Saturday after a long day of hard labor volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. With a few other friends (in the picture above) from Habitat, we ventured to Burlington NJ to a town called Cinnaminson (how cute is that ?) just 30 minutes outside the city.
We had originally planned to assist on a build site, but the weather was miserable so lucky for us we got to stay inside (in a Habitat Restore) and build walls =] While the entire day was a blast, it was also a lot of hard work and by the end of the day I had to recruit my roommate to get the milk out of the fridge for me because my arms hurt so bad (yeah I was being a little dramatic =] but oh well) From 8:30 to 2:30 we built the framing for the walls of a house! It was so cool to start out with raw material and end up seeing the skeleton of a wall. The construction manager informed us that he would be transporting the walls to the build site sometime throughout the week to start a new Habitat for Humanity house.
I have been on a lot of ‘builds’ where I had to do various tasks like painting, planting, and even constructing a driveway but I think today was my favorite experience. In a few hours, we created the base of a house, the part that’s going hold it up through the years. I’ll be able to go back to the site of the house and know that the family inside of it have walls because of Temple’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
